Minutes of a meeting of the Regional Niagara Waste Management Planning
Steering Committee (WMPSC) held in Committee Room 4, Regional Headquarters,
on Tuesday, January 22, 2008, commencing at 11:15 a.m.
Councillor Goulbourne introduced Mr. Clarke Bitter, President and CEO of P & C Compostech to Committee members and asked that he proceed with his presentation. Mr. Bitter thanked Committee members for the opportunity to speak and advised that it was his and his company’s, goal to replace Polystyrene (Styrofoam) in today’s society.
He further stated that P & C Compostech had been granted an exclusive distributorship, in Canada, of compostable bamboo paper products (Compostech) and that they had conducted market viability tests, receiving an extremely warm response.
The following were, in part, highlights of the presentation and information provided:
- Compostech will break down in landfills with three calendar months (31 days, in a backyard composter) as they are composed entirely of plant material (Bamboo and Sugarcane)
- Customizing is possible; able to emboss logos, recycling information and trademarks.
- Compostech is edible and can be used in the refrigerator, freezer, microwave or oven.
- Compostech contains no chemicals or heavy metals although does have high fluorine levels.
Currently Compostech is made in China however, P & C is attempting to build a factory in Saskatoon. Compostech is FDA approved and awaiting Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) approval; expected approximately in April 2008.
In closing, Mr. Bitter stated that currently the City of Toronto was trying to impose a 5 cent tax with respect to Polystyrene (Styrofoam) use (under the City of Toronto Act).
